Motion Branding Project Diary - Episode 2
This is the second in a series of videos documenting a live, paid, client motion design project.
In this episode I talk about:
► Personality in animation
► Tricky expressions
► Finding inspiration in nature
► What to do when clients ghost you
I’ll show work in progress animations for the first phase of work the client outlined. Specific behaviours the device they provided needs to exhibit.
Most of the work is still being done in After Effects, but I also talk about working in Cavalry.
If you have any questions about this episode or the project generally please ask in the comments below.
=============================================================
*DISCLAIMER*
*This video series documents a motion design project from start to finish.*
*To ensure a smooth creative process and respect client confidentiality, I’m not accepting unsolicited creative ideas or pitches at this time. The final creative direction has already been established with the client.*
*We have a well-defined creative workflow for this project, but we appreciate your interest!*
Feel free to leave any comments or questions.
=============================================================
*Revised “Spring” expression that Dan Ebberts helped me with:*
Add this expression to the position of any layer which is parented to another layer to add lag and bounce, as if the layer is being pulled by the parent layer.
*Please note that unfortunately youtube doesn't allow angled brackets in their titles or descriptions, so you need to manually adjust the below expression. It won’t work if you just copy and paste it.*
I've replaced any instances of an angled bracket with “*greater than*” but let me know in the comments if you still have issues.
f = 3;
d = 4;
att = 1.0;
nst = 38;
acc = [0,0];
st = thisComp.frameDuration;
t = time;
w = f*Math.PI*2;
p1 = toComp(anchorPoint,t+st/2);
for (i = nst; i *greater than* 0; i--){
p0 = toComp(anchorPoint,t);
v2 = (p1-p0);
pm1 = toComp(anchorPoint,t-st/2);
v1 = (p0-pm1);
a = -(v2 - v1);
del = time - t;
if (length(a) *greater than* .01){
acc += a*Math.sin(del*w)/Math.exp(del*d);
}
t -= st;
p1 = pm1;
}
acc /= att;
value + fromCompVec(acc);

Procedural 3D Motion Trail After Effects Tutorial
Переглядів 2,6 тис.28 днів тому
In this tutorial I’ll show you how to create a fully procedural 3D Motion Trail. Once you’ve set it up, all you need to do is drop in your cut out or rotoscoped footage, and it outputs a motion trail effect. You’ll have controllers to create a dynamic animation, and add your own controls depending on what you’re animating. This rig is ideal for dynamic sports motion graphics. So I’ve used foota...

    i think my first approach would be using valueAtTime to delay squares based on distance from the center square

    • @gregkrazanski
      @gregkrazanski 8 днів тому

      yeah i thought you might get something like that. i guess it's not 100% the desired effect. although another thing i might try is using that bounce expression but also have the amplitude increase, the frequency decrease, and the dampening increase the further away from the center square a square is. might look more natural

      Great suggestions! Adding valueAtTime based on the distance from the centre square is a really great shout. If I can figure out how to make it work I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks!

    Love these videos dude! They are so good, blows my mind how you come up with these ideas and then execute them. The behind the scenes stuff is really interesting! It’s one of the things I love about this channel, it’s not just tutorials, it’s about motion design and the industry. I do have a question for you. I’ve been self learning after effects for about year or so for work, trying to branch out. I’ve learnt the basics and I think I have a fairly solid foundation, but I feel I have plateaued. The question I have is, How do you ‘get good’? How do you take your work to the next level? They stuff I do is ‘fine’, but I know it can be better, feel more professional, but not sure how to get there? I appreciate its kind of a vague question, but any help/tips/resource recommendations would be amazing. Also, I now have a need to go watch Cliff Hanger 😂

    • @TheVideoShopLondon
      @TheVideoShopLondon 11 днів тому

      Thank you! So glad that these videos are useful to some folks. Really, thanks for commenting. Wow, that's a big question. I've been thinking about it most of this morning actually, and I don't want to give you a glib, lazy answer (not that that usually stops me). I might try to do a video specifically on this subject because I think it's such a great question. I think if possible, working in proximity to great motion designers is one way. Either getting a junior position in a great agency, or even asking to intern (I know interning is a whole can of worms in and of itself tho). If that's not possible, connecting with and following / studying motion designers and agencies you admire. Many are VERY open and generous with what they share online about their process and workflows. Courses. Don't ask me which, but actively studying and learning from professionals. If you can't pay for courses then studying the work you admire and forensically picking apart what makes it great. The design / editing / colours / camerawork / audio / animation timing etc etc. Collabs I find are good. Forces you to engage with others, hit a deadline, get a personal project done rather than sitting in a folder unfinished. Get good at coming up with ideas. Ideas never go out of fashion and always stand out and impress. There's definitely more. That was just a quick braindump. And the glib / lazy one I said I wouldn't give. I'll pin your comment and hopefully other people will chime in. Cliffhanger holds up amazingly well. And it has one of my favourite trailers of all time: ua-cam.com/video/-aLkkr458nI/v-deo.html Studiocanal got the rights and did an updated trailer for it (you can find it on youtube as well) but while it's slick and well done, it DOESN'T COMPARE. There's always time to rewatch Cliffhanger.

      @@TheVideoShopLondon Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate that it was quite an expansive question! 😅 Some really good ideas and things to look into. I'm currently working on a personal show reel - one animation per month so by the end of the year I should have something ok-ish to show for it. Its been good, off the back of doing that and being proactive I have started to get more motion coming my way at work. The only way you get better is by doing! Thanks for the content too - super inspirational, and its always appreciated! 🙌🏻

      Roto out the footage before you add it to the first comp in this tutorial, then look for my tutorial "Custom Motion Trail Rig" : )

    Great list. I shudder sometimes thinking of projects early in my career or just missteps along the way. As an ambitious starter, it's easy to overlook the logistics or think of boring things like onboarding or statements of work. Clear expectations and documentation at the beginning of a project goes a long way. Hopping on a call is definitely key for many situations.

      Absolutely. I wish I'd had this (or preferably, better) advice when I started. And not just freelancing, dealing with clients and bosses.

      The Phantom of the Paradise. A kind of bonkers Brian De Palma musical from 1974. I only discovered it recently. It's gold for b-roll

      Indeed. And anyone who knows me knows to ask literally anyone BUT me if they want either of those

    And from my limited experience if a client only has half of those red flags, they're already easier to work with than most.
